Calamus Oil is a well known oil among ancient Romans as well as Indians, as it is an efficient ingredient in Indian medicines known as Ayurveda. It is a yellow clear liquid with fresh and sweet citrus herbal odor. Extraction and Composition

The oil is derived by the steam distillation of unpeeled dried roots or fresh roots of the calamus plant. This is an red aquatic plant, called Acorus Calamus, which is found in marshy, watery places. Some of the chief components of this oil include acorenone, alpha calacorene, calamusenone, alpha aselinene, beta asarone, calamendiol, camphone, iso shyobunine, shyobunone distillation and beta gurjunene. Also, its main components are calamendiol, acorenone, alpha calacorene, alpha aselinene, beta gurjunene, shyobunone, beta asarone, calamusenone, camphone and iso shyobunine.

Properties And Benefits

This essential oil possess several properties such as stimulant, anti-rheumatic, anti-spasmodi, cephalic, antibiotic, circulatory, nervin, tranquilizing substance, memory boosting. These properties make it a perfect and an important ingredient in making diffusers, soaps, perfume oils, scents, lotions, massage oils, air fresheners and other aromatherapy products. Further, the oil has a shelf life of 4 to 5 years and it should be carefully used for external purposes after its proper dilution. To prevent any skin infection, a skin test is recommended before its use. Also, it has a maximum acidic value of 4.00, that is it safe when used properly. The specific gravity of this oil is 0.940 to 0.980 @ 25ºC and the refractive index is 1.5500 to 1.5525 @ 25ºC. Besides this, the Calamus Oil contain several nutrients such as  Ocimene, Linalyl Acetate, β – Caryophyllene, β – Gurjurene, δ – Elemene, ar- Curcumene, α -Muurolene and  Linalool
