Native to the Americas, the Evening Primrose Oil is extracted from the seed that is obtained from the evening primrose plant and is commonly used to treat a range of skin problems such as acne, eczema, etc. Traditionally, the plant was used by native Indians to treat soreness of throat, hemorrhoids and bruises. It has been speculated that the healing effects of the oil may be due to the presence of an omega 6 fatty acid called Gamma Linolenic Acid or GLA. The oil can be consumed orally or applied on the skin topically.

Benefits Of Using EPO

  • Helps reduce hot flashes: A recent study has found that women who regularly consume the oil are less susceptible to hot flashes that occur during menopause. The study also concluded that women who used the oil had better social interaction and were less impacted by the hormonal effects of menopause.
  • Controls blood pressure: Evening Primrose Oil is known to reduce the systolic blood pressure by upto 4 percent. Though it sounds meager, this decrease is clinically significant. The oil can be used during pregnancy to treat preeclampsia which causes elevated levels of blood pressure in women.
  • Calms nerves: Neuropathy or nerve pain can be significantly reduced by consuming Linolenic acid as it is capable of reducing the symptoms related to the same including numbness, sensitivity, weakness, etc.
  • Reduces symptoms of PMS: Premenstrual symptoms such as irritability and depression can be effectively treated using the Evening Primrose essential oil. Research suggest the PMS is caused due to prolactin in some women and its effects can be treated by using GLA as it is converted to prostaglandin E1 which does not allow prolactin to initiate PMS.
  • Improves skin health: The oil is known to rejuvenate the skin and helps keep it moisturized which is essential to keep the skin firm and resistant to fatigue. GLA or gamma linolenic acid that is present within EPO helps maintain the ideal structure of the skin and is not naturally generated by our body due to which it is vital to maintain skin health.
